Langara Fishing
The MV Marabell is a self-guided fishing resort where guests fish two per boat. A Fishmaster or “super guide” is always on the water, able to provide on-the-water support when needed. He’s always within radio communication distance, able to give you more bait and tell you about salmon fishing hotspots, coach you on your technique, and climb into your boat to help you net your dream catch. Fishmasters spend their days on the water, and know the waters around Langara Island like no other.
At the MV Marabell, guests fish from 17’ Boston Whaler Montauk’s with 40 hp, 4-stroke Yamaha motors. These easily maneuverable boats get you to the fishing grounds quickly and provide a stable platform to play that 100 pound halibut.
Guests fish with 10 ½ ’ Lamiglass rods with a choice of Shimano 2000 GT Single Action or Penn 320 LD double-action reels, rigged with Triple Fish 25 lb. test line, 25 lb. Maxima leaders and Eagle Claw Laser Sharp Hooks. For those targeting halibut, the MV Marabell has 6’ Shimano TLC 66-H rods and Shimano TLD 20 reels. Each boat comes equipped with an Eagle Fish Easy II Sounder and an Icom 402S VHF radio.
Whether you’ve been Alaska salmon fishing, fly-fishing in the Bahamas or completely new to salmon fishing, each trip begins with an orientation providing information about recent weather conditions, tidal information, where the bite is and other general resort information. Guests are then given instruction on how to operate the boats and bait hooks as well as take care of the equipment.
For novice anglers, the resort offers a New Frontiers Program for more on-the-water fishing tips and instruction.
Masterfisherman Club
Oak Bay Marine Group believes in celebrating spectacular fish and the anglers who catch them. The exclusive Masterfisherman Club honours Chinook/King salmon over 50 lbs, Coho/Silvers over 20 pounds and halibut that top the scales at over 100 lbs. Each angler who catches one to these trophy fish is awarded the title Masterfisherman. He or she is recognized by the captain at dinner, given a hat and pin, has his or her name engraved on the resort plaque and receives 10,000 Fanatic Fishing Points. It’s an honour that most aim for but only a select few achieve.
